Toronto’s Most Multicultural Neighbourhood

Part of

collection

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, The Ward was one of Toronto’s most diverse neighbourhoods and often the first home for newcomers arriving in the city.

Located near present-day Dundas, Bay, and Elm Streets, the area brought together Jewish, Black, Chinese, Italian, and Eastern European communities who lived, worked, and built businesses side by side. It became home to Toronto’s original Chinatown and served as an important centre for immigrant life and culture.
Over time, much of the neighbourhood was demolished through waves of redevelopment. Today, only fragments remain — but The Ward’s legacy continues to shape the story of Toronto itself.
