Long before electronic music became mainstream, Toronto’s underground club scene was taking shape inside a former club space at 185 Richmond Street West.
Opened in the 1980s by the Assoon brothers, The Twilight Zone became one of the city’s first major venues dedicated to house, garage, and electronic music at a time when rock still dominated Toronto nightlife. The club drew an eclectic mix of artists, designers, fashion crowds, goths, and LGBTQ+ communities, helping define a new cultural scene in the city.
Known for its influential DJs and legendary sound system, The Twilight Zone played a major role in shaping Toronto’s electronic music culture before closing in 1989.
