At 15 Duncan Street, beneath an otherwise unremarkable downtown building, Toronto’s punk scene found its first real home.
In June 1977, the Crash ’n’ Burn club opened in the basement, founded by members of the Diodes and their manager. Loud, chaotic, and defiantly independent, it quickly became a gathering place for Toronto’s emerging punk community and hosted some of the city’s earliest punk performances.
The club lasted only a few months before complaints from other tenants — including the Ontario Liberal Party, which occupied offices in the same building — led to its closure in August 1977. Despite its short life, Crash ’n’ Burn helped launch a new era of music and counterculture in Toronto.
