Vazaleen was a monthly women-centric queer club night. Organized by artist Will Munro (1975-2010), it featured lube wrestling and bobbing for butt plugs, set against a backdrop of 1970s-era porno flicks, punk rock, and funk. It made its freaky debut in 1999.
In contrast to many other club nights – queer and straight – Vazaleen was women-oriented. “I wanted women to know instantly that this was their space as much as anybody else’s,” said Munro. Vazaleen ended its monthly parties in 2006, and Munro passed away from cancer in 2010. But Vazaleen returns every Pride Week, as a fundraiser for the Will Munro Fund for Queer and Trans People Living with Cancer.
