In 1855, a visiting American circus troupe found themselves at the centre of one of Toronto’s strangest public riots.
After a performance, several clowns reportedly got into a violent altercation with local firefighters at a brothel. By the next day, tensions had escalated into a full-scale mob attack on the circus grounds. Tents were torn down, tables overturned, and chaos spread through the site before the Mayor himself arrived to restore order — reportedly stopping a firefighter from attacking a clown with an axe.
Soon after, the circus packed up and fled the city.
