Like much of Toronto, this building reinvented itself many times over.
Originally opened in 1922 as The Standard Theatre, it served as an important centre for Toronto’s Yiddish-language theatre community and immigrant cultural life. Decades later, the venue had transformed into an entirely different kind of entertainment space, hosting burlesque acts and late-night performances during the city’s changing nightlife era.
By the 1960s, the theatre became the target of police morality raids tied to Toronto’s strict standards around public decency — a reminder of how closely the city once regulated performance, sexuality, and public behaviour.
