In 1950, Letros Tavern – a gay club renowned for its night life, drag entertainment, and their Egyptian-themed Nile Room opened across from the King Edward Hotel. Soon a tradition began where Letros patrons would walk over to the King Eddy paired as man and woman to avoid scrutiny, before heading off with their actual same-sex partners to spend the night. Eventually, the King Eddy caught on and tried to put a stop to it.
