What makes a food distinctly Toronto?
Join us for an evening of storytelling, tasting, and exploration as we uncover the flavours, traditions, and communities that have shaped the city’s culinary identity.
Community leader, cook, and cultural educator Rahaf Alakabani will explore Syrian culture and its contributions to Toronto’s rich cultural landscape. Through stories, conversation, food, and song, Rahaf will share traditions, recipes, and memories passed down through generations, offering insight into the experiences, resilience, and community-building efforts of Syrian newcomers in Toronto.
Guests will enjoy traditional Syrian food while learning about the cultural significance of the dishes and the role food, art, music plays in creating belonging, fostering connection, and building community. The evening also includes a guided exhibition tour, offering new perspectives on Toronto’s diverse cultural history.
Presented in partnership with The Depanneur, an ongoing social and culinary experiment that explores food’s role in building community, creating opportunity, and celebrating diversity. Since 2011, The Depanneur has connected food producers, creators, and consumers through shared culinary experiences and storytelling.
