Toronto Stories: Daphne Odjig

Part of

collection

During World War II, Daphne Odjig, a young assembly line worker, taught herself to draw by studying art at the Art Gallery of Toronto and Eaton’s College Street gallery. Despite being self-taught, Odjig later received Canada’s highest civilian honors, including the Governor General’s award in Visual Art and the Order of Canada. In this clip from our Toronto Stories Live event, artist Bonnie Devine explores Odjig’s legacy, with Elder Dr. Duke Redbird presenting a poem inspired by her work.
