The Yorkville Rock

Part of

collection

The iconic 650-ton “Yorkville Rock” was transported in pieces from the Canadian Shield in Gravenhurst, Ontario.

Sitting quietly in the Village of Yorkville Park, the Yorkville Rock is a glacier-carried boulder transported from the Canadian Shield — a 1-billion-year-old reminder of our ancient landscape. But this boulder is more than geology. It symbolizes the spirit of Yorkville in the 1960s, when the neighbourhood became the heart of Toronto’s hippie movement — a place where artists, musicians, activists, and young dreamers reshaped Canadian culture. From coffee houses to folk stages to political organizing, Yorkville became a launchpad for voices that defined a generation. Today, the rock stands as a tribute to that era’s creativity, rebellion, and community.
